Get to Know Me

Hi, my name is Zahrah and I am a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist.

It is my life’s mission to enable children and young people to understand the world around them and communicate freely.

I believe the ability to communicate is the source of our greatest joys and that is no different for children and young people.

How did I get here?

Well, several years ago, my nieces and nephews came into the world and spending precious time with them made me realise how much I enjoy helping children to learn and grow.

The consistent joy they brought me sparked an interest in working with children in a professional capacity and I did so in various settings before becoming fully qualified as a SLT.

Now in my daily practice as a SLT, I am privileged to work with parents in supporting their children’s development and find this incredibly rewarding.

As well as a SLT...

I love to travel and explore new places, skyscanner is my go to for travel bargains! I enjoy being out in nature and it is a must for me to take a regular walk by the river. It helps me to refresh and reset! I also have a creative side and will include modern calligraphy wherever I can.

Education and Experience

I am an independent Speech and Language Therapist who graduated from City University of London with a degree in Speech and language therapy.

My previous qualifications include an NVQ Level 2 in Childcare and BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

I have a robust S&L toolkit, developed through my work in various settings, including (but not limited to): nurseries, mainstream primary and secondary schools, private clinics, NHS clinics and young offenders institutes.

My special interests are in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental language disorder (DLD). I currently support families with children from the age of 1 and provide teletherapy for children from the age of 5-18 years old.

I am a certified member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists as well as being registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)

DLD is a difference in the brain that makes talking and listening difficult. It affects the way that children and young people understand and use language.

These difficulties can make everyday tasks challenging. DLD is a language disorder that is not associated with another diagnosis e.g. autism, brain injury or a genetic condition.

Speech and language therapy can help children develop their language skills and learn new skills to reduce the impact of their communication difficulties.

Language Delay

A Language delay means that a child is currently not developing the language skills expected for their age.

This could mean that your child is able to use single words to communicate, however, is not putting words together.

It could also mean that your child is able to formulate sentences to express their wants and needs, however, struggles to answer age appropriate wh-questions (e.g. who, what, where, why).

Feel free to schedule a free 30 minute consultation to discuss any concerns you may have about your child's language development.

Social Communication Disorder

Social Communication Disorder (SCD) refers to difficulties in using verbal and nonverbal language in social situations.

This can include following rules in conversation, understanding inferential language, sarcasm, nonliteral language, adapting communication styles for particular environments and making friends.

I'm here to help. If you have any questions, or would like to work with me, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
